Between the Sea and the Mangroves

Nusa Lembongan has no shortage of guesthouses. As elsewhere in Indonesia, a certain architectural standardisation has a tendency to creep in: the same small bungalows, the same swimming pools, the same tropical vocabulary rearranged slightly from one property to another. And on a small island, where building possibilities are naturally limited, finding somewhere genuinely spectacular is not necessarily the point.

At Mangrove Beach Hut, what makes the difference is not the building. It is where you wake up. The little collection of wooden bungalows sits at the quieter northern end of Lembongan, directly beside the sea and only a few minutes from the mangrove forest. Step outside in the morning and Bali itself stretches across the water in front of you, its mountains rising on the horizon beyond the sea. Behind you, the mangroves begin. Somewhere in between sits your bed. It is difficult to imagine a better place to be caught between two worlds.

Mangrove Beach Hut is not luxurious, nor does it pretend to be. The bungalows are simple, clean and comfortable, with air conditioning, private bathrooms and small terraces. What you are paying for is not marble, a pillow menu or an infinity pool carefully positioned for Instagram. You are paying to sleep between the jungle and the sea, away from the more commercial centre of Jungut Batu, where evenings become genuinely quiet.

And then there is Dipa. Mangrove Beach Hut is family-run, and once you begin to know Dipa and his family, the distinction between guesthouse and family home becomes pleasantly blurred. Dipa manages the place and seems capable of arranging almost anything you suddenly decide you need: a scooter, a harbour transfer, snorkeling, paddleboards or a trip through the mangroves. His family is equally present, and guests repeatedly describe precisely the feeling I had there — less of being processed through an accommodation business than temporarily absorbed into someone else's island life.

That matters to me more than another perfectly designed bathroom. Lembongan is developing quickly, and with development comes the inevitable procession of increasingly polished hotels. There is nothing inherently wrong with that. But places like Mangrove Beach Hut preserve another form of hospitality: smaller, simpler and based considerably more on the people who welcome you than on the facilities listed beneath their photographs.

The location also encourages a different relationship with the island. You are removed just enough from central Jungut Batu to feel away from things, without actually being isolated. The mangrove is beside you, the sea is in front of you and the busier parts of the island remain only a short scooter ride away. It is slightly roots, wonderfully quiet and perhaps a little inconvenient if your definition of a holiday requires room service every twenty minutes. For me, that is rather the point.

And when morning comes, you do not need to go very far. Walk a few minutes along Mangrove Road and you reach Agung Beach Club, the wonderfully laid-back beach haunt associated in my memory with Papa Louis. Calling it a beach club almost oversells the formality of the place. Think sand, sea, simple food, a small pool, music and an extraordinary view across the water towards Mount Agung. Current descriptions still characterise it as a low-key local beach bar rather than one of the highly engineered beach clubs of mainland Bali.

There is something slightly Jamaican about this end of Lembongan. A little improvised. A little weathered. Alive without trying desperately to entertain you. Mangrove Beach Hut belongs perfectly to that landscape. Come here if you want luxury and you may leave wondering what you missed. Come here because you want to wake beside the water, know the family running your guesthouse and disappear into the mangroves before breakfast, and you may understand exactly why I keep coming back.

Choose Mangrove Beach Hut for its location and people, not because you are expecting resort services. Rent a scooter if you want to move around the island freely, but leave enough time to enjoy precisely what you came here for: doing very little.
