JJ's Burgers

The Burger Worth the Boat Ride

I am going to commit a small act of culinary irresponsibility and say that JJ’s may serve the best burger I have eaten in Bali. Not the most elaborate, not the most expensive and certainly not the one served in the most beautifully designed room. Simply the one that has given me the most satisfaction.

JJ’s Burgers sits in Jungut Batu on Nusa Lembongan, in a setting modest enough that you could easily pass without understanding what is happening in the kitchen. Do not let the décor make the decision for you. This is Lembongan, and the pleasure here has very little to do with interior design.

What matters is what arrives on the plate: beef smashed onto the grill until the edges caramelise while the centre remains juicy, sauces with real personality, toppings that work together and, perhaps most importantly, an excellent homemade bun. Soft, slightly rich and perfectly proportioned, it is the detail that turns a good filling into a genuinely memorable burger.

The woman I associate most with the place is Zian, the chef, and she does remarkable work. There is something almost unreasonable about the precision of the result considering how casual the surroundings feel. The Jungut Classic gets the fundamentals exactly right, while other versions explore truffle, fried chicken and more indulgent combinations. The Killer Fries have also earned their name and deserve to be ordered at least once. Everything feels generous without becoming ridiculous, and homemade without being used as an empty marketing claim.

I have eaten burgers in considerably more ambitious establishments and paid considerably more for them. Very few have made me as happy. Perhaps that is why JJ’s belongs so naturally to Lembongan. The island is often at its best when it stops trying to imitate mainland Bali and simply concentrates on doing something properly.

JJ’s follows the same principle. There is no theatrical plating, no carefully manufactured atmosphere and no need for a DJ to convince you that you are having a good time. There is simply a very good kitchen making an excellent burger.

Calling it the best burger on Lembongan therefore feels almost unnecessarily cautious. I would happily put it against most burgers I have eaten anywhere in Bali. You may disagree, of course, but taste it first.

Recommendation

Do not judge JJ’s from the street and do not come looking for an atmosphere manufactured by an interior designer. Come hungry and concentrate on what Zian and the kitchen are putting between those buns. If you love burgers, missing JJ’s while staying on Lembongan would be a fairly silly mistake.
